A favourite Tasmanian hardwood, Blackwood is a timber that is easily worked and favoured by furniture makers and craftspeople alike. Grown in the wetter areas in Tasmania the trees can reach heights up to 40 metres. Blackwood is definitely an “appearance” timber with a heartwood that is a rich golden brown. It has a medium and even texture, and its grain can either be straight or have a wavy fiddleback pattern. The wavy fiddleback being highly valued for furniture and veneers. With endearing qualities, it is easy to nail and glues particularly well. A smooth polished finished can be achieved making Blackwood ideal for furniture.
